INPCS Leadership: Ambereen Mehta

Ambereen Mehta, MD, MPH, FAAPHM
Vice President / President-Elect, INPCS

Dr. Ambereen Mehta is a physician leader, educator, and researcher dedicated to advancing palliative care for individuals with serious neurological illnesses. She currently serves as Medical Director of the Palliative Care Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and holds joint appointments as Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Mehta earned her BA from Pomona College, her MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview, followed by a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health and a fellowship in Medical Education at UCLA. These experiences shaped her commitment to integrating palliative care into complex care systems and training the next generation of clinicians.

Her clinical expertise lies in neuropalliative care, particularly for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). At Johns Hopkins, she developed one of the few multidisciplinary ALS clinics in the United States with embedded specialty palliative care, improving patient and caregiver experiences and fostering interprofessional collaboration. Nationally, she has become a recognized voice in the field, co-authoring the 2025 International Neuropalliative Care Society (INPCS) consensus statement on research priorities and leading initiatives to amplify patient and caregiver perspectives in care design.

Dr. Mehta’s research focuses on improving quality of life for people with ALS and other neurological conditions. She is the Principal Investigator of the only federally funded study examining the safety and feasibility of psilocybin for ALS patients with depression and serves as a co-investigator on multiple ALS Association–funded projects. Her scholarship includes more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences. She also serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management. A passionate educator, Dr. Mehta directs the Johns Hopkins Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship rotation at Bayview and has developed curricula for neurocritical care and neuropalliative care training. She has co-authored educational modules for the EPEC-Neurology series and frequently lectures on neuropalliative care topics across the United States and abroad.

Dr. Mehta’s leadership extends beyond Johns Hopkins. She is a founding member of INPCS, where she chaired the Strategic Communications Committee and now co-chairs the ALS Working Group. She has co-led the Palliative Committee of the Northeast ALS Consortium and the Neuropalliative Special Interest Group within the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Her contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the INPCS Tara Cook Award for Innovation in Neuropalliative Education, the Johns Hopkins Clinical Care Team Award, and designation as a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine. Through her clinical innovation, research, and advocacy, Dr. Mehta continues to shape the future of neuropalliative care, ensuring that patients and families receive compassionate, person-centered support throughout the course of serious illness.
