Writing Workshop - "Narrative Neuropalliative Care: Workshop in Writing and Reading Skills in Clinical Care"

Instructor(s): Rita Charon, Jocelyn Jiao
Time: 8:30am-5:00pm
Description: In this interactive writing workshop, we will present core principles and practices of narrative writing in health care settings. We will discuss and demonstrate fundamental writing and creative skills that are needed for effective written communication. The workshop will combine very close readings of literary, visual, and clinical texts, intensive spontaneous writing exercises, sharing of writing in small groups, and longer form writing on participant-chosen topics. Keeping in mind the goals of such writing, we will discuss confidentiality and privacy as they influence patients, institutions, interdisciplinary teams, and the writers themselves. Finally, we will talk about ways to build one’s writing skill toward the wherewithal to write with skill, purpose, and ethicality in neuropalliative care.
Intended Audience: Anyone interested in using writing as a tool to promote neuropalliative care, interdisciplinary collaboration, or personal self-care by improving their writing skills.
Registration Fees: $99 INPCS member / $199 non-member

Patient/Carepartner Working Group (the format for this session has changed from a workshop to a working group)

Time: 8:30am-5:00pm
Description: Although patient and family involvement is critical to the provision of high quality palliative care there are few resources or trainings to give patients and families the skills and confidence needed to effectively advocate for themselves in clinical situations or to push for broader system changes. The goal of this working group is to bring together interested stakeholders, including clinicians, researchers, foundations, activists, patients, and families, to discuss what resources are currently available, what resources are needed, and how to develop and validate resources, as well as how to disseminate resources once available.
Intended Audience: Physicians, clinicians, researchers, foundations, activists, patients, and families
Agenda Items:

  • What are the informational, material resources and skills that patients and families would ideally have to better advocate for their own care and system improvement?
  • What resources are currently available across neurologic illnesses that can serve patients and families directly or serve as models for other foundations to adopt?
  • What are the next steps to develop and validate resources and trainings?
  • What are the next steps for sharing, implementing and disseminating these resources and trainings?

Registration Fees: Free!
How to Register: The registration form for this workshop is included in the registration form for the INPCS Annual Meeting, which can be accessed by clicking here.
